Papeete: The capital city of French Polynesia is hardly a city, but nonetheless Papeete is a bustling and vibrant place. Look for bargains, Black Pearls, and Pareus in the busy public market, known locally as Le Marche. Papeete is the only place in the Society Islands that has any form of nightlife outside the resorts, and its charming winding streets beg exploration.

June through October is when the weather is slightly cooler, and November through April is when it is less crowded.

What To Do & See

circle Island Tour: This deluxe tour around Tahiti introduces many points of interest, both historical and scenic. Check out places like One Tree Hill and Point Venus and get a taste of the island’s rich history at its museums. There is a break for lunch at the fabulous Gauguin Restaurant where food becomes art.

Safari Excursion: This full-day, action packed adventure is a thrill you’ll not soon forget. Go off-roading to the inner regions of the island. Waterfalls and raging rivers greet passengers in the jungle interior, while stops at sites of archeological interest expose the rich culture of the Tahitian Islands.

Horseback Riding: If you want a more natural viewing method of the Tahitian jungle, skip the Jeep Safari and take a trek on horseback. There are many mountain trails where your gentle steed leads you through lush foliage and tumbling waterfalls. There’s no more exhilarating way to tour thejungle!

Golf: A former cotton plantation, the 72-par Oliver Breaud International Golf Course is the only course on the island and is a good challenge even for seasoned players.

Diving & Snorkeling: Plumb the depths or snorkel the surface, either way the abundance of life in the Tahitian lagoons will leave you in awe. There is an average of 130 feet visibility in warm water with minimal currents.

Museum of Tahiti: For a unique view into the history and culture of Tahiti, this museum is a “must-see.” The proud natives were able to retain much of their culture throughout the European attempt to “civilize” the islands of Polynesia. Many of those ancient traditions are preserved in this museum, even if they are no longer in practice.

Galleries: From the famous French artist, Paul Gauguin to local Tahitian artists, there is a gallery in Papeete to suit every desire. All the works shown are for sale and they include original pieces of Gauguin’s collection. Most of the galleries are located along the Boulevarde Pomare.

Shopping: If your goal is to stock up on French perfumes and fashions or take home a bit of Tahiti, the best shopping excursion is the Papeete Public Market located in the heart of the city. It is open from 5am to 6pm daily and houses many booths that are a delight to browse even if you don’t plan on buying much!
